Cloud note-taking service Evernote has laid off a large part of its US workforce. After the successful takeover by the Italian company Bending Spoons, the company is now moving to Europe. The background.
Back in November 2022, it was announced that the Italian technology company Bending Spoons wanted to take over the cloud note-taking service Evernote. At the beginning of 2023, the takeover was then in the bag. In February, the first mass layoffs took place: 129 employees had to leave.
Evernote lays off US staff and moves to Europe
Recently, the next wave of layoffs followed. Evernote announced this in an official blog post. According to this, the company would have informed its employees about the dismissal on 5 July 2023.
According to reports, almost the entire US workforce is affected. Also: an office in Chile. Meanwhile, Bending Spoons CEO Francesco Patarnello justified the decision with Evernote’s move to Europe. It states in this regard:
On 23 June, we announced to Evernote employees that we will be moving the majority of our operations to Europe, the home of our parent company Bending Spoons. We are taking this step to increase operational efficiencies and make the most of the Bending Spoons employer brand, which is extremely strong in Europe.
Evernote costs: price increase after takeover by Bending Spoons
According to Patarnello, affected employees will receive a substantial severance package, including four months’ pay and up to one year of health insurance coverage.
Previously, Bending Spoons revamped Evernote’s subscription model and raised prices. Since May 2023, only the Evernote Personal and Evernote Professional plans have been available in addition to the free subscription. Since then, the Personal subscription has cost 12.99 euros per month instead of 7.99 euros.
The Professional plan now costs 14.99 euros per month instead of 9.99 euros. Alternatively, Evernote also offers an annual subscription. In concrete terms, this means 99.99 euros per year for the Personal package and 129.99 euros for the Professional subscription. The effects of the Evernote move to Europe and the increased prices are not yet foreseeable.
