The next browser has taken a bite out of ChatGPT. After Bing, Opera is also integrating the AI software into its sidebar. The background.
There seems to be no end to ChatGPT’s flight of fancy at the moment. Opera is the next well-known tech company to jump on the AI bandwagon.
This puts Opera right up there with Microsoft. Only a few days ago, the US company announced its intention to integrate AI into its Bing search engine and Edge browser.
Last week, Google also presented its own AI software, Bard. Now ChatGPT is also to make its way into Opera’s browser sidebar. The company announced this in an official blog post.
What does Opera hope to achieve with ChatGPT?
Opera says it wants to enhance the browsing experience for its users. With the integration of AI, the company is building on its history.
“In the more than 25-year history of our company, we have always been at the forefront of browser innovation. Whether inventing browser tabs or providing our users with built-in access to generative AI tools, we have always pushed the boundaries of what is possible on the web,” explains co-CEO Song Lin.
After the massive interest in generative AI tools, we believe it’s now time for browsers to become the gateway to an AI-driven web.
Opera: What can ChatGPT do in the browser sidebar?
The first browser extension based on ChatGPT can be found in the sidebar of the browser. Here, Opera has added the “Shorten” button.
With it, users can have the content of a page or article briefly summarised. “Users of the internet are constantly inundated with content, the amount of which we cannot possibly process,” says the company’s announcement.
Since AI can help us generate written content, there will also be more and more of it. With the shortening function, users should then be able to grasp it more quickly.
Opera is redesigning its browser to give users better access to the services made possible by AI, explains Krystian Kolondra, EVP PC Browsers and Gaming at Opera.
Opera believes that we are on the cusp of a new era of creativity on the web with the development of AI solutions for text, image and audio generation and countless other forms.
When will the feature be available?
In addition to the shortening feature, Opera plans to make other AI-based tools available in the future. “We are excited about the rapid adoption of developer tools for solutions like Google Bard and are starting to develop and introduce new experiences in web browsing that seemed impossible not so long ago,” says Per Wetterdal, head of strategic partnerships and AI ecosystem at Opera.
According to The Verge, however, the new feature will not be available immediately. According to the US magazine, Jan Standel, VP of marketing and communications at Opera, is quoted as saying that the function will be “introduced in the browsers very soon”.
