Clubhouse was the hype app during the Corona pandemic. But in recent months, the platform has become rather quiet. This is about to change, because Clubhouse wants to completely reposition itself with a new app.
Clubhouse only had to lay off half of its employees in April 2023. The former hype around the app quickly vanished after the Corona pandemic.
But now the platform wants to return to its former glory and has completely reorganised itself. We show you what the new Clubhouse can do.
New app: Clubhouse wants to realign itself in the future
Already in the wake of the wave of layoffs a few months ago, the app’s creators announced the realignment. The platform would have had to evolve after the Corona pandemic to “find its role in the world”, they said in April.
That search is now probably over, as Clubhouse has repositioned itself. In future, the platform is to be “more like a messaging app”, but “more social”.
Our goal was to make it 100 times easier for you to hang out with friends all day, run into friends unexpectedly and meet new friends through your existing friend groups – even if you don’t have a lot of friends on Clubhouse or a lot of time to spare.
New chat section to make a difference
To that end, the app introduces a new section called Chats. A chat, it says, is comparable to a Clubhouse room – “a pure group chat with your favourite people”.
The platform compares the new function to a mixture of group chats and Instagram Stories, where users can “hear their friends’ voices, meet their friends and spend less time typing”.
Users can chat with each other even if they don’t speak the same language. Clubhouse automatically transcribes all messages and translates them into the language of the user.
Clubhouse app: friends instead of followers
In the new version, the app also says goodbye to the follower model. In future, friend requests will replace following each other on the platform.
We’ve always felt that the best part of Clubhouse is being with friends and meeting their friends.
The switch to the “friends” model is “a big change” but “the right move in the long run” for the platform.
