WhatsApp is the world’s most popular messenger. But it is not only used on the smartphone, but also on the desktop. After the renewal of the desktop app for Windows, a new version of WhatsApp is now available for the Mac.
WhatsApp has around two billion monthly users worldwide. This means that the messenger service from Meta leaves the competition far behind. WeChat and Facebook Messenger follow with only 1.3 billion and 930 million monthly users respectively.
But while WhatsApp’s journey began in 2009 as a pure app for smartphones, the service is now also popular as a web version and desktop app.
Only at the beginning of the year did the Facebook sister revamp its desktop app for Windows. Now Mac users are also to enjoy this “optimised experience”, as WhatsApp itself calls it.
What can the new version of WhatsApp for the Mac do?
The biggest innovation of WhatsApp for Mac is probably the group calls. For the first time, these are now also available in the desktop version for MacBooks.
Up to eight people can participate in a video call. For voice calls, the number even goes up to 32 people. In future, users will also be able to join a group call that has already started.
In future, it will also be possible for the app to send notifications about incoming calls when it is not open.
The design has also been revised
WhatsApp has also thought about innovations for the Mac in the design of the desktop version. WhatsApp itself says that the design places particular emphasis on making it “easy to use” for Mac users.
In future, it will be possible to share files via drag-and-drop in the chat. Users will also be able to view more of their chat history.
