WhatsApp is getting a new message format in the form of videos. In future, you will also be able to send instant video messages in the app. We show you how to use the new function.
It’s hard to imagine WhatsApp chat without voice messages. But apparently that’s not enough for the platform. In future, users will be able to send videos in a similar way on WhatsApp.
Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg also compares the new feature with the familiar voice message. In a Facebook post, he writes that the new video function is “as easy as sending a short voice message”.
WhatsApp: Record and send videos in the chat
At first glance, sending videos does not appear to be an innovation for WhatsApp. But the new instant video messages are designed differently from the previous video function.
This is because users can use the instant videos in a similar way to the previous voice message. Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook post contains a video preview of the new video function.
WhatsApp videos in chat: This is how you can use the new function
However, there should not be a new button for the new function in your chat window. This is because WhatsApp has hidden it behind the button for voice messages.
If you want to send a video message, you have to click on the small microphone for voice messages next to your input field. By simply tapping it, you switch the function from voice to video message.
Now you can record a message as usual by holding the button. If you hold down the button with the small camera, a new view with a round window opens. After a three-second countdown has elapsed, you can record your video.
This way you can send videos up to 60 seconds long in a chat. These then appear in the same circular view in your chat window.
As with voice messages, it is also possible to record a video message hands-free. To do this, you also have to hold down the button and then swipe upwards.
When will you be able to use video messaging?
According to The Verge, WhatsApp has been testing the new feature for a while. According to it, the introduction on iOS and Android had already started at least last month.
WhatsApp itself does not comment on the start of the rollout. However, according to a blog post, the new video function “will be available to everyone in the coming weeks”.
